The Australian dollar (AUD) fell for the fourth consecutive trading day against the US dollar (USD) on Wednesday, under pressure from the strengthening of the US dollar. The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) data is lower than expected, but the dollar is still rising, with traders remaining cautious amid continued inflation concerns and the threat of escalating U.S. tariffs.

AUD/USD fell slightly during the U.S. trading period. As of press time, the pair was trading around key psychological support level 0.6500, down more than 1% so far this week. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index (DXY), which measures the performance of the dollar against a basket of six major currencies, hit a three-week high and remained around 98.80.

The US PPI data released on Wednesday was lower than expected, further strengthening signs of slowing inflation at the producer level. PPI in June remained flat on a month-on-month basis, failing to meet the 0.2% expectation, slowing down from the previous value of 0.3%. On an annual basis, PPI fell to 2.3% from 2.6% in May.

At the same time, the core PPI excluding food and energy was 0.0% month-on-month, lower than expected 0.2%, and fell from 2.6% to 2.4% year-on-year.

Despite weak data, the market seems to have overlooked this unexpected downturn, and traders are still paying attention to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which shows inflation remains stubborn. Cautious remarks from Fed officials have also curbed market expectations of an impending rate cut. xmserving.combined with rising global trade tensions, these factors helped support the dollar, despite the softer PPI data.

With Australia, weak economic data continue to put pressure on the Australian dollar. Consumer confidence remains sluggish, AThe NZ-Roy Morgan index fell further into the negative territory in July. Meanwhile, inflation has cooled down and is currently close to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) target lower limit of 2-3%. These signs increase expectations that the RBA may cut interest rates in the next meeting.

Looking forward, all eyes will be focused on Australia's employment reports and U.S. retail sales data, both of which will be released on Thursday. Australia's employment data could impact the Reserve Bank's next move, especially if the data indicates further weakness in the labor market. Meanwhile, U.S. retail sales will provide new insights into consumer spending. Strong data may further support the dollar, while weak data may relieve some upward pressure.
